A bunch of links (an introdution to Web 2.0 and education)

I’m positively thrilled to be in Barcelona this week. Obviously, that’s largely because Barcelona is a very special city and this is my first visit. I’m just as pleased to be taking part in the Web 2.0 and Education Seminar. It is an honour to share a program with such accomplished and dynamic leaders in this field.

In terms of what I intend to discuss during my session, I’d like to keep a few surprises to myself… But there are a few touchstones that have been very influential on my thinking in this area, and you can expect I will be drawing on these sources heavily.

I’ve been very fortunate to be awarded a research fellowship with the Center for Open and Sustainable Learning, and to have the chance to work more closely with a longtime hero of mine, David Wiley. This past spring he gave a fantastic talk in my home town of Vancouver on the importance of openness to the effective use and reuse of learning resources. In a sense, I’ve been rehashing large sections of the talk ever since.

I’ll be drawing on some of Alan Levine’s recent work on cataloging digital storytelling tools, and share some of the discussions that have resulted that attempt to identify what characteristics of these tools makes them tick.

As usual, I’ll be talking a whole lot about mashing up content and data, with special focus on that gateway mash-up format RSS. One of my favorite innovators in this space is Pedro Pernias based in Alicante, Spain and I hope to briefly show some of the stuff happening just a short hop by train away from here.

Time permitting, I may reference some of the potential raised by “client-side” browser extensions such as Greasemonkey. I highly recommend you check out Scott Leslie’s 10 minute video on how this technology can open up whole new approaches to working with educational resources.

Hopefully the session will prompt some discussion from the many amazing people who are attending this event. It’s going to be a great week!
